SOUTH DAKOTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra has been in existence since 1922. The orchestra has 13 full-time musicians and draws from over 100 area musicians. Those per-service musicians are teachers, doctors, farmers and every other profession one can think of. Each is chosen through an audition process and provides an inspiring level of talent. The orchestra is conducted by Delta David Gier, known as a dynamic voice on the American music scene. Gier apprenticed with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the invitation of Riccardo Muti and conducted eastern European orchestras as a Fulbright Scholar. For the past eleven seasons, he has been the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and, more recently, for the Metropolitan Opera. He was recently named the NYP’s conductor for youth concerts.
