KEVIN LOCKE NATIVE DANCE ENSEMBLE
“The Drum is the Thunder, the Flute is the Wind”Kevin Locke Native Dance Ensemble

The Kevin Locke Native Dance Ensemble is a touring Native dance troupe of three to six dancers. Kevin Locke’s solo career focuses on education and performances dedicated to a message of “unity through diversity.” His solo concerts and school assemblies are titled “The Hoop of Life,” and Locke uses this one dance plus his flute playing and storytelling to teach children and adults about the connectedness of humanity. The Native Dance Ensemble, in contrast, is focused on conveying the beauty, value and mystery of Native cultures, particularly Lakota. Their concert is called “The Drum is the Thunder, the Flute is the Wind,” and incorporates music and dance from several tribal traditions. Dances include the Eagle, Fancy Shawl, Buffalo, Shield and Spear, Traditional, Sneak-Up, Hoop and Fancy Dances. Guest artists may perform dances from eastern and Pacific Northwestern tribal cultures, emphasizing the diversity of Native dance traditions. In a theater, the production can be elaborate, including multi-media and theatrical elements enhanced by lighting effects, while still maintaining the authenticity of the dance and music traditions. For outdoor productions, a much simpler program is offered. Although the focus is on concerts, the group does educational programs when requested.
