KEVIN LOCKE
THE HOOP OF LIFEKevin Locke

Kevin Locke has performed all over the world, yet he remains committed to South Dakota and the Standing Rock Reservation. Locke is a former elementary school administrator with a master’s degree in educational administration. His performances and programs are highly entertaining, and Lock is a resource for the history of Lakota and South Dakota tribal traditions. He is the sole remaining source for certain traditional Lakota flute songs, learned from his now-passed elders, which he will be recording for the Smithsonian Institute. In his “Hoop of Life” performances and programs, Locke shares the beauty and meaning of the ritual dance of the Elk Dreamers, the Hoop Dance. As part of the dance presentation, he also shares the message of the unity of all humanity, as well as our relationship to Mother Earth. A renowned flutist, Locke has been recognized as a Master Traditional Artist and has received the National Heritage Fellowship award from the Folk Arts Program of the National Endowment for the Arts.
