Hands-on Partnership for Science, Literature & Art

The Hands-On Partnership for Science, Literature and Art in South Dakota (HOP) brings high quality science and art experiences to young people regardless of where they live. HOP features a collection of four hands-on traveling exhibits that inspire exploration of science, literature and art. Each is accompanied by kits full of activities, works of art and literature related to the exhibit theme, plus exhibit manuals with directions, media kits and additional art resources. Exhibits are Light & Color, Bugs’ Eye View, Animals as Architects, Dinostories, Go Figure and Termespheres which is based on the work of South Dakota artist Dick Termes.
Each exhibit can be reserved for one month, with the host community picking up the chosen exhibit in its cargo trailer from the previous host. While in the host community, local artists and scientists, teachers, librarians and volunteers offer workshops and story times based on the activities in the kit. HOP exhibits are designed to spark the on-going fusion of art and science into year-round activities in the host community. To facilitate this continued interest, each sponsor community receives a HOP backpack on the chosen theme. This model backpack includes books plus at-home art and science activities to initiate a backpack program series that can be checked out by local families year-round. Free training on this system can be provided.

Technical requirements: Volunteer to pick up cargo trailer from prior host community, four volunteers to set up exhibit (approximately 1 to 2 hours), basic electricity access for exhibit, adult supervision of exhibit, two to four volunteers to clean and load exhibit at month’s end. Project coordinator to be in charge of exhibit during host community’s tenure with exhibit.

Fee structure: $1,000 for one month in host community.
