FLOWER AND FLAME
MAGDALENA MODZELEWSKA
Flower and Flame is an international musical project created by Polish violinist Magdalena Modzelewska, currently a member of the South Dakota Symphony and the Dakota String Quartet. The ensemble was formed to bind the best practices of American musical performance with that of Europe, and to highlight outstanding young talent. Three violinists combine with a violist and cellist to present the diverse essence of music, the “flower and flame of life.” The ensemble joins the different aspects of performance—music, speech and costume—to produce an educational and highly entertaining program. In 2007, Flower and Flame presented “A Nightly Magic—Classical Sounds and Hans Christian Andersen,” featuring the prominent South Dakota actor, Darrel Fickbohm. The program highlighted the work of Andersen through story and music, with original arrangements by Modzelewska featuring solo violin with string quartet accompaniment.
Technical requirements: Stage or other performing space sufficient for five musicians, five music stands, four armless chairs, light sufficient for reading music, air temperature between 70-78ºF, microphones for larger spaces, off-stage room for changing during intermission.
Fee structure: Performance $2,000 to 2,500; Master class, workshop/clinic or informal daytime school performance $600. SDAC support up to 50%.
