BRIAN J. PROBALL

Brian ProballAll of Brian’s theater design residencies focus on how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are neccessary to make theater. During the residency students will explore the five elements of design and then create an original scenic, costume or light design. Students will have the option to create an original 5-minute “Rock and Roll” demonstration using a mini light lab, a costume design plate based on mathematical proportions, or a half-inch scale scenic model that focuses on engineering and building techniques. As designers, students learn how important it is to be able to communicate ideas while working in a group. By exploring design, students learn how to collaborate with other team members in the classroom.

Each Theater Design residency can provide opportunities for design projects integrated with existing classroom curriculum in history, science, or math. Theater design residencies can also support other artistic projects such as dance, spoken word, or plays by working with students to provide scenic, lighting and/or costume designs for a performance. Longer custom residencies can also support a complete original student performance that is written, designed, choreographed and performed by a company of students. The artist will provide specialized technology, such as a small-scale lighting system, that is brought right into the classroom for students to get hands-on experience.

Brian has designed more than 70 productions for many regional theaters across the US including most recently: The Duluth Playhouse in Duluth, MN; Stages Theatre Company in Hopkins, MN; and Playhouse Merced in California. He has a BFA in light design from the University of Minnesota, Duluth and a MFA in scene design from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Brian feels that it is important when selecting a professional artist to bring into today’s classroom that they reflect 21st century skills and creativity that will be needed in tommorow’s workplace.
