Flandreau Indian School student wins 2007 Congressional Art Competition Steven Edwards’ pencil drawing titled “Gaze Into the Plains” was selected in a statewide competition to win the 2007 South Dakota Congressional Art Competition for High School Students. A junior at the time of his selection, Edwards will return this fall to Flandreau Indian School to complete his high school education. His winning entry will hang for one year in the corridor between the Cannon House Office Building and the United States Capitol alongside work representing the congressional districts from every state. Edwards also received a $200 cash award made possible by the Scholarship Fund of South Dakotans for the Arts, which is funded by the Patricia Bawdon and Arthur Holub Endowment Funds. Jordan Boose, Dakota Valley High School, received second place and a $50 cash award. His watercolor painting will hang in Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin’s office for the next year. The South Dakota Congressional Arts Award is sponsored by Rep. Herseth Sandlin with administrative support from South Dakotans for the Arts/Alliance for Arts Education and the South Dakota Arts Council. Each congressional district represented in the United States Congress is eligible to select a high school student’s work for inclusion in the show. |
